M Night Shyamalan was praised for his casting decisions, casting rising young stars such as
Nicola Peltz as Katara, Jackson Rathbone as Sokka, and Noah Ringer as Avatar Aang. Though Shyamalan did receive criticism for his casting of Katara’s brother, Sokka, as well as Aang, he explained that it was important for him to find the actor “that brings the primal emotion required for the story.”
