Gender-based violence (GBV) is a major issue in many countries around the world. It is a violation of human rights and has devastating effects on individuals and whole communities. To combat this issue, many organizations have been formed with the goal of fighting against GBV. Here, we discuss two of these organizations and the ways in which they contribute to the fight against GBV.
Identifying Organizations
The first organization is the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). UN Women works to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. It works to end all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, and to promote legal, economic, and social justice for all women and girls.
The second organization is the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The IRC works to respond to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster. It works to protect and empower women and girls, who are disproportionately affected by conflict and disaster, and to prevent and respond to gender-based violence.
Contributing to the Fight Against GBV
UN Women works to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls through a range of initiatives, including awareness-raising campaigns, advocacy, and research. It also works to strengthen laws, policies, and institutions to promote gender equality and end violence against women and girls.
The IRC works to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. It provides medical care and psychosocial support to survivors of GBV, and works to ensure that survivors have access to legal services and justice. The IRC also works to raise awareness about the issue and to build the capacity of local organizations to respond to GBV.
The UN Women and the IRC are two important organizations that are working to combat the issue of gender-based violence. Through their initiatives, these organizations are helping to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, and to prevent and respond to gender-based violence.
The issue of gender-based violence (GBV) remains an issue confronted by people globally. The United Nations (UN) defines gender-based violence (GBV) as any act that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life. GBV includes but is not limited to domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
In order to combat this problem, there are two organizations that are especially committed to the effort: 1) THE WORLD ASSOCIATION OF GIRLS AND WOMEN (WAGW) and 2) THE JOINT UNITED NATIONS PROGRAMME ON HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
The World Association of Girls and Women (WAGW) works to empower and protect girls and women from gender-based violence through the support of education, mentorship and information sharing. WAGW focuses awareness on the prevalence of GBV and mobilizes activism for equality. The organization works through local, regional and global networks to create spaces in which girls and women can discuss experiences and ideas, to create effective strategies for ending gender-based violence.
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) is a joint unconventional partnership between ten United Nations Organizations to accelerate collective action towards a safe and secure world for all. UNAIDS is the lead agency for HIV/AIDS programs, and it also works towards addressing violence against women. UNAIDS works with partner organizations, other United Nations entities and civil society to equip communities with the skills and knowledge to protect and prevent gender-based violence.
In conclusion, while gender-based violence continues to be an issue globally, two organizations are offering support to combat the problem. The World Association of Girls and Women (WAGW) focuses on empowerment, education, and mentorship, and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) works with their partners towards addressing violence against women. Together, these two organizations are working hard towards providing a safe and secure world for all.
