In a sad farewell for British television, it has been reported that Jon Richardson has resigned from the immensely popular Channel 4 show, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.
The show has proved to be a major hit ever since its launch in 2012, providing a hilarious combination of classic countdowns puzzles, innuendo and celebrity guests. Richardson, who is best known in the UK for his appearance on BBC2’s Mock the Week, was a popular and permanent fixture on the show since it began, appearing alongside host Jimmy Carr. During his time on the show, Richardson held his own against such talented countdowns adversaries as Sean Lock, Joe Wilkinson and David O’Doherty.
The show’s devoted audience will be most disappointed to hear that Richardson has left the show with his last episode airing on 4th May 2019. ‘This was a far harder decision for me than it may appear onscreen,’ he commented in a statement. ‘I’ve had an incredible seven and a half years on the show, working with some of the funniest, most talented people in television. However, after being part of such a fantastic show for such a long time I feel this is the right move for me to make, and I wish everyone connected with 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Channel 4 and the game show world only the best.’
It is not yet known who his replacement will be, however whatever their identity, they should prepare to be unfavourably compared to Richardson’s brilliance on the show. His absence will be a great loss for fans of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and hopefully he will surface in other funnier endeavours.
