The paddler was enjoying a beautiful day on the water when a massive humpback whale jumped out of the water and landed on the kayak, sending the adventurer flying into the water. To the kayaker’s surprise, the whale wasn’t interested in them but rather the bag of snacks that had been sitting in the kayak’s storage compartment.
The whale quickly dove back into the water, leaving the kayaker in shock and without their snacks. While the paddler may have been disappointed, it’s hard not to chuckle at the thought of a giant whale stealing a bag of snacks. At a kayaking tour off the coast of San Diego, California on Tuesday a small, but brave group of paddlers experienced a once in a lifetime encounter with a magnificent humpback whale. What started off as a casual morning kayaking tour soon became a scene straight out of a National Geographic special as the group quickly noticed they were being approached by an 8 ton whale emerging from the depths.
Moments later, the whale breached the water making a spectacular display which garnered cheers of excitement and awe from the paddlers. But, moments after the majestic display, the whale began making its way over to the kayaks and lunged right out of the water, with its mouth agape, lifting them out of the water!
The scene quickly became one of a terrified adventure as the whale gave each of the kayakers a snack attack! One of the tour guides told the breathtaking story; “We all started laughing at first, suddenly the kayaks began rocking, and before we knew it, the whale came up from under the kayaks and devoured the paddlers’ snacks.”
Thankfully, no one was injured from the incident and the paddlers were eventually able to make it to the shore safely and dry. Everyone, who was part of the tour, will remember the extraordinary experience for years to come.
It is highly suspected that the whale was simply looking for a snack and the determined paddlers at least got a good story out of the experience. Thankfully all our visitors and staff are safe and sound. The event has also been a great lesson in kayaking safety, as the group was properly prepared, able to remain calm and aware of their whereabouts in the ocean.
