Tonkmor is a self-taught visual artist and spoken word poet based in the DMV area. Fascinated by the beauty in everyday life, she uses her art to share stories of battling depression and redefining blackness. As she paints her thoughts, does spoken word poetry, or conducts workshops, her intent is to use her work to connect people from all backgrounds and to engage viewers in conversations on mental health, self-love, and embracing one’s identity.
In addition to being an artist, Tonkmor is a creative educator. She created and facilitates the Mini Creations Workshop Series, which focuses on self-expression through creative writing and visual arts. Through this project, Tonkmor enjoys learning and growing right alongside her students as they explore and discuss topics such as identity, Black power, and mental health.
Her expressive and empowering artwork has been featured in many galleries, podcasts, podcasts and even an art exhibition at Union Market in Washington, DC. However, it doesn’t end there. Tonkmor also works to spread her message of positivity through personal connections and being a part of the larger community. When asked about her overall mission, she says, “I want to use my art as a reminder for my community to love and connect with one another even during the toughest times.”
Through her artwork and interactions, Tonkmor continues to spread joy and understanding of social issues and empower individuals from all walks of life. Her dedication to creating art that inspires, inspires others to do the same thus, leaving a ripple effect of positive change in the world.
