Tommy Raudonikis was a true icon of Australian rugby. Born in Bathurst, NSW, he began his career with the Western Suburbs Magpies in 1969, quickly establishing himself as a fierce and determined halfback. Over the years, Raudonikis played for several different clubs and represented both New South Wales and Australia on numerous occasions. He was known for his toughness, his never-say-die attitude, and his ability to inspire his teammates to greatness.
But Tommy Raudonikis was more than just a rugby player. He was a beloved figure in the Australian sporting community, admired for his humility, his kindness, and his infectious sense of humour. Rugby fans around the world have just recently lost a beloved legend, Tommy Raudonikis. He was often to referred to as “Tom Terrific” and was recognised for notable achievements in the Australian rugby league.
Raudonikis was born in WA in 1950 and was described as a tenacious and fearless player, known for his unique playing style, quick wit and energetic nature. His passionate and determined demeanour typical of his rugged background was highly admired and respected by his peers.
Raudonikis first hit the professional rugby league ranks in 1969, playing for the Western Suburbs Magpies and later his career took him to the Newtown Jets, the Balmain Tigers, the NSW State of Origin, and the Australian national team in the 1972, where he won six caps.
Raudonikis’ greatest experience however came during his time as the captain of the Western Suburbs Magpies in 1974. During this time the team had a record winning calendar season and Tommy, who was the sole leader at the time, succeeded in leading the club to their first grand final since in 1962.
Raudonikis’ leadership and uncompromising nature continued to excel once he moved to the coaching arena, as he managed to coach both the Newtown Jets and the Western Suburbs Magpies to a number of grand finals in the 1980s.
After his retirement in 1992, Tommy Raudonikis became an Australian icon. His contributions to the sport, serving as commentator, mentor, and welfare officer, led him to be one of the most outstanding Rugby League figures in history.
Raudonikis made a huge impact in the rugby league world and will be deeply missed by all. The future of the sport will remain forever indebted to this incredible legend. Thus, it is important to remember and celebrate his extraordinary legacy.
