On January 6, 2021, the United States Capitol was the site of a violent attack by pro-Trump supporters, resulting in five deaths and extensive property damage. In response, the House of Representatives created the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack to investigate the attack and its roots. This article will provide an overview of the attack, and discuss the House Select Committee’s investigation.

    Overview of the Attack

On January 6, 2021, a large group of pro-Trump supporters gathered in Washington D.C. to protest the results of the 2020 Presidential election. The crowd was largely peaceful throughout the day, but a smaller group of protesters eventually stormed the Capitol building, resulting in a violent attack that left five people dead and extensive property damage. The attack was condemned by many politicians and citizens alike, and the FBI launched an investigation into the incident.

    House Select Committee’s Investigation

In response to the attack, the House of Representatives created the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack. The Committee is chaired by Representative Tim Ryan (D-OH), and is tasked with investigating the attack and its roots. The Committee has the power to subpoena witnesses, and has already held several hearings with witnesses from the Capitol Police and other relevant organizations. The Committee is also looking into the planning of the attack, the security failures that allowed it to happen, and the lack of coordination between law enforcement agencies. The Committee is expected to issue a final report sometime later this year.

The House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack is an important step towards understanding the attack and its causes. The Committee will help to shed light on the security failures that allowed the attack to take place, and will hopefully help to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

On the morning of January 6, 2021, a mob of insurrectionists breached and besieged the Capitol Building of the United States as Congress was meeting to formalize the election of President-elect Joe Biden. In response to this historic attack on American democracy, there has been a nationwide call to find out what happened, who should be held accountable, and how to prevent similar events from occurring in the future.

In response to this, the United States House of Representatives has created the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, which is tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the events of January 6, its cause and its aftermath. The committee is made up of Chairman Bennie G. Thompson and eight other members, including five Democrats and four Republicans, and has been given the power to subpoena witnesses and documents, as well as access secure facility briefings. It is expected to submit a final report to the House of Representatives by the end of 2021.

The objective of the committee is to investigate the security failures that led to the attack and provide recommendations for preventing similar attacks in the future. It is also tasked with examining the roles of any individuals or organizations involved in planning, coordinating, or instigating the attack, as well as the roles of organizations responsible for responding to the attack. In addition, the committee will investigate and make findings and recommendations on the role of social media in the attack, and will receive briefings on any other issues it deems necessary.

The January 6 attack has underscored the fragility of American democracy and the need to understand what happened in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. The House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack is an important step in doing this, and its findings and recommendations could be critical to protecting the future of American democracy.
