John Roberts was born in Buffalo, New York in 1955. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1979 and his Bachelor of Arts in History from Harvard College in 1976. After graduating, Roberts worked as a law clerk for Judge Henry Civilents on the United States Court of Appeals. He also worked in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

In 2003, President George W. Bush appointed Roberts to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
